Norton Branch Fire Department started in 1973 due to numerous brush fires that damaged property and a Train Derailment. The Norton branch Community Development Club and the residents of the area decided there was a need for a Fire Department and the department was started with 25 members, with 2 fire trucks. One a 1946 Chevrolet Pumper Truck donated by Cannonsburg Fire Department. Which was kept in a one bay garage loaned to the department by the Shawhan family just up the street from the present location. The other truck was a 6X6 military truck loaned to the department by the KY Division of Forestry. Which was kept at one of the firefighters home until the new station was built in 1975. Until 1979 when the Carter County dispatch center started paging over radios. When there was a need for the department people would call a firefighter’s home and that firefighter would notify the others. There was a siren added at the station in 1976, which when the firefighter was called he then set off siren for the others to know. To date the department has 20 members, 5 pieces of equipment, a light plant, a boat, and cover approximately 75 sq. Miles with a day time population of 7,500 both rural and East Park Industrial.
